The Long List

Best Things to Do in Punta del Este

A working list of what's worth your time on the Uruguayan coast, from the obvious icons to the slower coastal corners locals quietly prefer.

Stand at La Mano on Playa Brava

The five concrete fingers half-buried in sand are the city's signature image. Go in early morning or just before sunset, when the light is soft and the crowds thin.

Walk the peninsula loop

From the marina, follow the seafront past the lighthouse and back along Gorlero. It takes under an hour and gives you the whole shape of the city in one slow walk.

Time the Casapueblo sunset

Carlos Páez Vilaró's white sculpture-house at Punta Ballena turns coral at dusk. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset, grab a clericó, and stay for the brief ceremony.

Cross the wavy bridge to La Barra

The Leonel Viera bridge is famously undulating. On the other side: galleries, design shops, slower beaches at Bikini and Montoya, and a louder nightlife scene after midnight.

Spend a slow day in José Ignacio

Half an hour east, José Ignacio trades crowds for dunes, fishing boats, and beach clubs where lunch easily stretches into late afternoon.

Eat seafood at the marina

Grilled corvina, fried calamari, and a cold Albariño at one of the Puerto restaurants is one of the simplest pleasures the coast offers.

Take a boat to Isla Gorriti

Twenty minutes by launch from the marina, this small island has two calm beaches, a few seasonal restaurants, and the ruins of an old Spanish fort.

Watch sea lions at the port

A small colony hangs around the fishing docks year-round. Keep your distance, don't feed them, and you'll see them up close without disturbing anything.

Drive out to Laguna Garzón

Past José Ignacio, the circular bridge over Laguna Garzón is worth the detour. The lagoon itself is glassy, quiet, and good for a stop before continuing east.
