Walking the Peninsula: Lighthouse, Marina, Gorlero

The Punta del Este peninsula is compact enough to understand on foot. A thoughtful loop can connect the lighthouse, port, central streets, and the meeting point between the calmer Mansa side and the open Atlantic of Brava.

Start near the lighthouse

The lighthouse gives the peninsula a clear visual anchor. From the surrounding streets, move toward the port and marina while staying on public routes and respecting residential areas. Access to individual sites can change, so treat exterior landmarks and the streetscape as the dependable core of the walk.

Continue toward the port

The waterfront near the marina changes through the day as boats move and restaurants prepare for service. Observe sea life from a respectful distance, follow posted instructions, and never feed wild animals.

Avenida Gorlero is the peninsula’s traditional commercial spine. It provides a practical connection between waterfront sections and a place to pause for coffee or supplies. Business hours vary by season; do not rely on an old listing for a specific stop.

Finish on the water

  1. Choose the Mansa side for softer evening light and a marina connection.
  2. Choose the Brava side for open Atlantic views and a more exposed shoreline.
  3. Use marked crossings and keep attention on traffic near busy junctions.
  4. Carry water and sun protection; shade can be limited.

Make the peninsula easier to read

A private lighthouse walk suits a focused visit, while a broader city tour works well when you want more context beyond the central loop.

The loop does not need a fixed start or finish. In warm weather, begin early or later in the day. In wind or rain, shorten the waterfront sections and use the central streets. The point is orientation: after one circuit, the geography of Punta del Este becomes much easier to read.
