A Day in José Ignacio
Half an hour east of La Barra, José Ignacio is a tiny lighthouse village wrapped between two beaches. Long lunches, dune walks, low buildings, and the quieter side of Uruguay's coast.
José Ignacio is the village every magazine writes about when they want to describe something effortless. It's small enough to walk in twenty minutes, with a lighthouse at one end and a wide beach on each side: Playa Mansa to the west, Playa Brava to the east.
How to spend the day
Start late. Coffee and medialunas at a café off the main square, then a long morning on Mansa where the water is calmer. Lunch at a beach club, which in José Ignacio means a serious meal: grilled fish, local wine, dessert, and a coffee that arrives an hour after you ordered.
By late afternoon, walk the few blocks to the lighthouse and climb it for the best free view on the coast. Sunset on Playa Brava is wider and more dramatic; dinner happens at one of the small restaurants tucked into former houses.
Getting there
Around 40 minutes by car from central Punta del Este, depending on traffic. A car is the easiest way; rideshares work in summer but become scarce after dinner. There's no real bus service that fits a beach-day rhythm.
